Mouth guards

The National Sleep Foundation states that teeth grinding (or bruxism) is present in eight percent of all adults. This ranges from occasional grinding to literally waking up with a very sore jaw every morning. If you find yourself to be part of this group, you might be a candidate for a mouth guard.

A mouth guard is something that you wear at night to prevent your teeth from getting damaged due to grinding. While your dentist will have the final word as to whether or not you will need a mouth guard, you can still check out these three signs that could point you in that direction.

Sign #1: You Experience Chronic Grinding

Chronic grinding is when you grind your teeth most nights, regardless of temporary issues like stress in the workplace for example. You might need a mouth guard to keep bruxism’s negative effects on teeth to a minimum.

Sign #2: You’ve Chipped a Tooth (and You Don’t Know How It Happened)

A chipped tooth not only requires dental care, but it can also be an indicator that you grind your teeth. Wearing a mouth guard is certainly a lot cheaper than all the dental work you will need to have done if you continue grinding your teeth with no protection.

Sign #3: You Get a Headache Upon Waking Up

A headache in the morning could be because you grind your teeth at night. A mouth guard will help keep your headaches to a minimum (or none at all!) when worn at night.

Teeth grinding may be a common issue for some, but the damage that it can cause can really be serious and long lasting. Mouth guards (along with other ways of coping or dealing with bruxism) can certainly do a lot to help you deal with this condition!
