Fluoride Application

While it’s good to be vigilant about brushing and flossing your teeth after every meal, sometimes even despite your best efforts you might still get tooth decay. What’s one to do when such a thing happens? The answer lies in a special treatment called Fluoride Application.

Fluoride application is a procedure where fluoride varnish is added as a coating to your teeth to keep them from decaying. If decay is already present or inevitable, you’d still get to benefit from a fluoride application, as it will considerably slow down the process or keep it from becoming worse.

Fluoride is a mineral that helps strengthen your outer teeth’s coating or tooth enamel. It is perfectly safe, given than only a very small amount is applied onto the teeth and there is very little chance that you will end up swallowing it. It applies and hardens quickly, and in about four to twelve hours you can have it brushed off. You might be shocked to see that your teeth might turn yellow after fluoride application, but trust that its color will go back to normal once the varnish has been brushed off!

Fluoride application is very quick, easy and painless. Your dentist will “paint” the varnish on the sides and top of your teeth with the use of a small brush. The fluoride feels sticky at first, but quickly hardens as soon as it comes in contact with your saliva. Once it has dried, hours after the procedure, it will only take some light brushing to get it all off.

After fluoride application, take care to eat only soft foods that are either cold or warm and never hot. The same goes for liquids. Refrain from brushing or flossing your teeth in the next four to six hours as well. While fluoride applications cannot totally guarantee cavity-free for the rest of your life, it is encouraging to know that – along with regular dental care as well as having a healthy diet – fluoride applications will do its part in keeping your teeth as protected and healthy as possible!
