Dental Bridges

Just like the rest of your body, teeth, are subject to a lot of conditions that wear them out. If you experience loss of teeth or even advanced decay, you might want to consider getting a dental bridge to get your natural smile back. Here’s what you need to know about it.

A dental bridge is a type of prosthetic apparatus that spans an area of your mouth where teeth are missing. It has crowns on both ends (called caps), which are connected to the teeth and the space, which you need to fill out. False teeth are connected to the crowns and fills in for the missing natural teeth.

Do You Need It?

If you experience tooth loss through periodontal disease or even physical trauma (such as sporting accidents), then you might be a good candidate for a dental bridge. When teeth are missing there is the urgent need to fill in the spaces left in order to avoid the shifting and misalignment of the nearby teeth, which can affect – and even distort – your normal bite. Furthermore, teeth imbalance can also lead to temporomandibular joint (TMJ) or gum disease.

Types of Dental Bridges

For those who need dental bridges, there are three types to choose from:

  • Traditional – where a crown is connected to both sides of artificial teeth
  • Cantilever – where a single crown is connected to an artificial tooth, and
  • Maryland – where an artificial tooth is bonded to your remaining teeth on either side

Your dentist will be the one to determine which type of dental bridge is best for you, depending on the condition that your teeth are in.

With proper care, a dental bridge can last for a good decade before it starts showing signs of wear and tear. Because it acts as the replacement for missing teeth, you need to ensure that it is in its best condition so it, too, will give you only the most natural looking smile!
